How the Number Has Changed
Change since the July 10, 2026 close: −205 companies, from 5,797 to 5,592.
The series starts at the July 10, 2026 close (file 2026-07-11), the first archive file that includes US-listed foreign issuers; earlier files are not comparable. From the file dated September 27, 2026 (the September 26 close), preferred shares, exchange-traded debt, units, warrants and rights are excluded. The methodology correction note puts that at roughly 270 lines, which had been counted as companies, so most of the fall on that day is the correction rather than delistings. Earlier points have not been restated.

Why Published Counts Differ
Different sources count different things, which is why answers to this question range from under 4,000 to more than 6,000.
- Companies or listings. A company with two listed share classes, such as Alphabet, is one company but two listings. Exchange statistics usually count listings, and often include funds, preferred shares and exchange-traded debt. This page counts companies, and only common stock.
- Index constituents. Index providers apply size, free-float and liquidity screens, so a total market index holds fewer companies than are listed. Their current constituent counts are on the major indices page.
- Domestic or listed. Some series count only companies incorporated in the United States. This page counts every company listed on a US exchange and shows the split between US domestic filers and foreign private issuers above.
- Over-the-counter stocks. Thousands more securities trade over the counter rather than on an exchange. They are not exchange-listed and are not counted here.
- Timing. Many published figures are annual snapshots. This page is recalculated after every US trading day.
Method
- Universe: every security listed on NYSE, Nasdaq or NYSE American with a reported market capitalization, one line per company (the share class with the highest trading volume). See the Clay Total Market Index and its methodology.
- Count: the number of companies in that universe at the close. Exchange-traded funds and pooled investment vehicles, preferred shares, exchange-traded debt, units, warrants and rights are excluded.
- Exchange: the listing venue reported by the data vendor. NYSE American was formerly the American Stock Exchange.
- Filer status: SEC EDGAR, matched by ticker; see the note under US and Foreign Companies.
- Dates: each archive file is dated the day after the close it holds. Dates on this page are close dates.
